Product Description

We are sold out of Chiltepin pepper plants until our April 13 shipping date. Ordering this plant will delay the shipment of your entire order until at least that date.

New! 90 days to fruit, open pollinated native from the Southwest. The Chiltepin pepper, “chile tepin”, or “Chiltepine”, is a tiny, round or oval shaped, red to orange-red chile, measuring about .8 cm in diameter, about pea sized. It has grown in the wild throughout much of Northern Mexico and Southern United States for generations, and there is much folklore and history involving the plant in the US/Mexico Borderland areas. It is the only wild native chili pepper in the United States, sometimes referred to as “The Mother of All Peppers" as it is believed to be the original hot pepper from which others were bred (capsicum, not chinense). They are also called “bird peppers” because they are eaten and spread by wild birds, or bird's eye peppers because of their size.  About as hot as a Thai pepper - scoville units 50,000 to 100,000, but can get much hotter in the right conditions. The heat comes on fast, and doesn't stick around. Chiltepins are dried and ground, or stored whole for use in cooking. A fun plant to grow, can get to be a 3' to 4' bush, covered with the attractive little peppers, but needs a long season to do this. Overwinters indoors in pots better than most peppers. So, if you have a short season, that is an option.

We have a 6 plant minimum for shipping purposes. You can mix and match varieties to meet the minimum.
